Meroë, its history and archaeology are still ‘poor relations’ to Egypt and Egyptology; yet Meroë’s culture is striking and distinctive. Always reliant on trade with Egypt and the Mediterranean world, Meroë’s history is closely linked to Persian, Ptolemaic and Roman rule. Dr Robert Morkot will survey that historical relationship and how Meroë’s contacts led to a complex culture mixing indigenous Kushite with Egyptian, Hellenistic and Roman elements.

This talk was given at the July 2020 meeting of the Essex Egyptology group, which was held at 3pm BST on 5 July 2020, online via Zoom – click here to download a review of this talk.
